Fashion is the most salient way humans have expressed themselves on a day to day basis, so it stands to reason that as people spend more time online (and in the metaverse), they will begin to also architect how the look/are viewed in these spaces, especially as used under web3 standards of non-fungibility and interoperability. I would broadly categorize anything that one uses to represent oneself visually as fashion, so therefore the sector of representing oneself online should be referred to digital fashion. Here I’ll be going over a few examples of the various opportunities I see in the digital fashion economy. My thinking around digital fashion is largely framed by 3 categories - Physical-or-Digital, Physical-and-Digital, and Pure-Digital goods.

Overall, while I think much of the long term value will grow in the Pure-Digital Fashion space (just as a function of more people spending more time online in more rich spatial environments), there are clearly big universal problems that need to be solved before it can become a space with a lot of product velocity. Until I see some of the above issues solved, I’d say my interest will primarily focus on the Physical-or-Digital & Physical-and-Digital fashion spaces.

How do you think about digital fashion? Are there certain frameworks you’ve developed, or come across, that you use? Do you agree/disagree with my taxonomy of the space, or where I see the value accruing? Are you working on something new in digital fashion? If so, let me know! Every day should be a school day.
